{"id":2639,"date":"2020-05-01T13:58:20","date_gmt":"2020-05-01T01:58:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/o.nash.org.nz\/?p=2639"},"modified":"2020-05-01T14:05:41","modified_gmt":"2020-05-01T02:05:41","slug":"ngati-awa-remembers-edgecumbe-whakaari-and-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/o.nash.org.nz\/?p=2639","title":{"rendered":"Ng\u0101ti Awa remembers Edgecumbe, Whakaari and COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ng\u0101ti Awa have faced two recent disasters, the floods which hit the region almost three years ago and the Whakaari volcanic eruption a few months back, and now they face a deadly virus.<\/p>\n<p>Remembering Edgecumbe floods on 7 April 2017 &#8211; the day Cyclone Debbie struck the Eastern Bay of Plenty, forcing locals in their thousands to flee from their homes. Huge rainfalls forced the Rangitaiki Awa to burst the town\u2019s stop bank leaving all in its path underwater, homes destroyed and extensively damaged. However, the resilience from the haukainga, its community and local iwi helped reinstate the mana proudly known in the Whakat\u0101ne district.<\/p>\n<p>This article reports on steps being coordinated within the rohe o Mataatua \u2013 namely, te iwi o Ng\u0101ti Awa and its boundaries &#8211; as the impact of COVID-19 is felt here, with more than a million cases worldwide.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Ng\u0101ti Awa te toki te tangatanga i te r\u0101, te ngohengohe i te wai!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ng\u0101ti Awa Social and Health Service (NASH), Te Tohu i te Ora o Ng\u0101ti Awa, CEO Enid R\u0101tahi-Pryor expressed to Te Ao M\u0101ori News, her Social and Health Services \u2013 NASH, along with Te R\u016bnanga o Ng\u0101ti Awa management and staff, including other local services have had recent and current experience, planning and implementing systems to provide services to support, aid and assist their people and community in a time of tragedy, crisis and need.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2640\" src=\"http:\/\/o.nash.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/whakaari-1-rotated-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/o.nash.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/whakaari-1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/o.nash.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/whakaari-1-rotated-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/o.nash.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/whakaari-1-rotated-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/>In 2017 R\u0101tahi-Pryor played an active role on behalf of her organisation and her iwi in co-ordinating support and providing aid to families and communities affected by the Edgecumbe floods.In December last year, Whakat\u0101ne, Ng\u0101ti Awa iwi \/ R\u016bnanga and respective services in the social and health arena were once again thrown into emergency action and crisis with the eruption of Whakaari White Island, which witnessed many fatalities of local workers and overseas tourists.<\/p>\n<p>This led to daily karakia, which was an integral part of their emergency operations centre throughout the event, showing leadership on the ground for not only the iwi but nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n<p>R\u0101tahi-Pryor explained the response and cultural guardianship by Ng\u0101ti Awa and Mataatua iwi during this time, including the services and provision of resources from the local Councils and organisations.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2643\" src=\"http:\/\/o.nash.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/whakaari-4-rotated-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/o.nash.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/whakaari-4-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/o.nash.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/whakaari-4-rotated-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/o.nash.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/whakaari-4-rotated-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Through all of this, Ng\u0101ti Awa people and iwi services have been thrust into the front line of emergency planning, sourcing and implementation of resources to these tragedies.<\/p>\n<p>Now, facing the pandemic of COVID-19, last month Prime Minister Jacinda Adern announced to the country that New Zealand will enter into Level 4 Alert. All communities within Aotearoa lockdown for a period of four weeks.<\/p>\n<p>R\u0101tahi-Pryor explains that in her community and on behalf of their service, Ng\u0101ti Awa Te Tohu i te Ora, \u201cWe have started to roll out the Ng\u0101ti Awa Awhi strategy, which includes packages of support.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of food and home essentials were packaged and delivered to high-risk wh\u0101nau and kaumatua within the Eastern Bay of Plenty community of Ng\u0101ti Awa hap\u016b, including M\u014dt\u012bt\u012b island near Tauranga, as Ng\u0101ti Awa wh\u0101nau of Te Patuwai hap\u016b reside there.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2642\" src=\"http:\/\/o.nash.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/whakaari-3-rotated-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/o.nash.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/whakaari-3-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/o.nash.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/whakaari-3-rotated-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/o.nash.org.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/whakaari-3-rotated-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>R\u0101tahi-Pryor further explained, \u201cThe age bracket for kaum\u0101tua to receive the packages are 65 years and over, clients of the organisation with chronic conditions, those most vulnerable wh\u0101nau made further at risk by COVID-19\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She continues to say, \u201cThe iwi database identifies 250 kaum\u0101tua who have received these packages of support. However, there are a further 300 people who we are unable to make contact with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Te Tohu o Te Ora o Ngati Awa workers.
