{"id":1101,"date":"2019-06-26T11:00:43","date_gmt":"2019-06-25T23:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/o.nash.org.nz\/?p=1101"},"modified":"2019-11-01T09:20:45","modified_gmt":"2019-10-31T20:20:45","slug":"kaupapa-maori-antenatal-and-parenting-programme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/o.nash.org.nz\/?p=1101","title":{"rendered":"Kaupapa M\u0101ori Antenatal and Parenting Programme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Providing the foundation for all cultural and spiritual approaches at Te Tohu o te Ora o Ng\u0101ti Awa, the unique model of Te Pou Mataaho has become embedded in our Kaupapa M\u0101ori Antenatal and Parenting Programme from 26<sup>th<\/sup> June 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Facilitated by Health Promotion Coordinator Kim Rameka, who has over ten years\u2019 experience in high performance physical well-being, personal training and health promotion, the two-day programme is held monthly on site and in the comfortable surrounds of Te Whare Aroha.\u00a0 Support and comfort for hap\u016b m\u0101m\u0101 are essential for Kim who keeps class sizes to a minimum.\u00a0 She says <em>\u201cHap\u016b m\u0101m\u0101 have told me that low, intimate class numbers help them feel relaxed and maximise their learning.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A typical programme includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Learning about Te Pou Mataaho and how it relates to and can support you through each stage of pregnancy\/hap\u016btanga, child birth and early parenting;<\/li>\n<li>Brainstorming, sharing thoughts and ideas, supporting each other;<\/li>\n<li>Creating Ipu Whenua and Muka Pito (a very popular aspect of the programme);<\/li>\n<li>Learning about your rights as a birthing woman (T\u016branga kaupapa) to help with decision making and birth planning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Kim regularly receives feedback from Midwives that the M\u0101m\u0101 of her programme are more noticeably confident during the birthing process.\u00a0 M\u0101m\u0101 have also provided inspirational feedback:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe most important part for me was learning about our rights as Mums\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThis w\u0101nanga has taught me so much&#8230;exactly want I wanted\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI would recommend these classes because I have learnt so much&#8230;.feeling pretty confident\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIt shows that we as women are so strong and that our t\u012bpuna before us were hearty and so are we\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThis antenatal class is so amazing\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMentally I am now more prepared\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThis w\u0101nanga defintely taught me more about the M\u0101ori side of pregancy, labour and post natal care. It really opened my eyes and has made me consider incorporating that side of my ancestry\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Kim feels privileged to support Hap\u016b M\u0101m\u0101 and their wh\u0101nau through this precious stage of life, under the guidance of the Te Pou Mataaho framework.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The TE POU MATAAHO Framework<\/strong>: Antenatal and Pregnancy<\/p>\n<p>An entire module has now been developed that teaches wh\u0101nau how they can best take care of their hap\u016btanga, child birth and new born pepi using the 4 pou of <strong>Te Pou Mataaho<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Te Pou Ihorangi o Papat\u016b\u0101nuku <\/strong><em>(Spiritual)<br \/>\n<\/em><strong>Te Pou T\u0101taiwhakaheke o Hineahuone<em>, <\/em><\/strong><em>(wh\u0101nau, whakapapa)<br \/>\n<\/em><strong>Te Pou o Hinet\u012btama <\/strong><em>(T\u016brangawaewae\/ whenua)<br \/>\n<\/em><strong>Te Pou Aot\u016broa o Wairaka <\/strong><em>(The world around us\/ environmental)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Some examples for
